4Good shoe down to 30ºF
By KCR
I have used my Louis Garneau 0 Ergo Grip shoe for the last two years, and they've finally given up the ghost. In that time I've covered close to 10,000 miles on these shoes under almost every condition I can think of on SPD pedals. The shoes don't have much in the way of thermal properties. That's why I've listed it as good to 30ºF. I wear mine down to around 25ºF, but I'm typically comfortable wearing gear a little bit cooler than most. They have a zipper on the exterior that has to be pulled tight in order to close the shoe, however the shoe itself is rigid enough to prevent this compression from restricting blood flow. The neoprene cover is almost a token cover; it does a great job of shielding the wind, but has next to no thermal properties. In terms of waterproofing, I don't remember this or any other shoe being exceedingly waterproof when exposed to prolonged rides in the wet. As always, water can enter at the top. When combined with gaiters, the water still seeps through the external cover. Again, I'm not convinced that pulling the neoprene cover tight over the shoe is helping its case here. The sole is stiff, and generally has done a very good job. My right shoe sole cracked from the cutout for the 2 bolt cleats to the edge of the shoe, but still performs functionally. The screw in at the front is pretty much useless; I and a few friends use this shoe, and we've all lost at least one of the metal cleats that comes with the shoe (pictured in the item picture as the silver bit under the front of the shoe). Thus if you plan to use the screw in cleats... save the screws that you remove from the shoe when you first get it just in case.In order of things that broke on this shoe to date:Sole cracked. Not sure why, but considering I don't go jump tall buildings in these or anything outside of normal use, it's not because of carelessness. Still functions fine, although I think it lets in more water.Shoelaces lost their exterior cover. Still work just fine.Neoprene tore. I fell on some ice, and the neoprene on the right side tore on the ice. Not so durable. Still works just fineFinally, the zipper for the neoprene cover tore. If the neoprene didn't have to be pulled tight over the shoe, this probably wouldn't have happened. No longer usable.Essentially the shoe suffered a lot before it finally died.Overall, a good shoe for the price that you pay, but I'm not going to replace it with another one just like it. -1 star for the neoprene tearing and the sole cracking, IMO for a shoe that is drilled for MTB cleats you should expect that it will be used as a MTB shoe.
