Giro 2013 Men's Mele Triathlon Cycling Shoes (Obsidian/Highlight Yellow - 45.5)

Product Description

We don't have to tell you that triathlon shoes are a whole different ballgame than traditional cycling shoes. And luckily for your feet, Giro already understands the fundamental differences. With Giro's Mele Triathlon Shoes, you receive the ideal blend between comfort and power -- easier said than done. To achieve this golden ratio, Giro engineered the Mele Triathlon shoes to ride the line between comfort and rigidity. As you've probably experienced, triathlon shoes tend to lean towards one polar extreme or the other. In our experience, we find that most manufacturers develop the outsole as stiff as possible, only to later compensate with the upper design. However, through its partnership with Easton in the development of the Mele's EC70 carbon fiber outsole, Giro was able to integrate both properties, seamlessly. The EC70 outsole features a low stack-height that dramatically reduces weight, while still retaining an impressive level of stiffness. But, if the sole is too stiff, your feet are going to suffer on the running leg of the course. That's where EC70's fiberglass composite comes in. This element of the construction permits just enough flex over the arch to maintain a consistent level of blood flow. Even further along the lines of comfort, Giro and Easton designed the transition point between the outsole and the upper to allow 'spill over.' Instead of wrapping up the corners of the carbon, the Mele greets the ball of the foot with the upper. This means that when your feet either swell or expand, say when you stand on the pedals, the EC70 outsole permits the room for this expansion to occur. So, you can say goodbye to hot spots and one of the most common points of abrasion. You'll also find that the flow of thoughtful designs carries over to the insole and uppers of the Mele. Starting at the uppers, breathability is the name of the game. Take a look, and you'll see that a majority of the surface area is constructed from air mesh.

The best riders in the world rely on Sidi Shoes for race day, and mountain bikers are no exception. Nino Schurter wore Sidi Dragons when he won the World Championships in 2009 and the World Cup the following year. The Sidi Dragon 3 Carbon SRS Shoes are the latest evolution of what has been Sidi's no-holds-barred effort at making the perfect MTB shoe. The Dragon 2 was obviously a tough act to follow, but this Dragon 3 offers a few new details that make it even better. Most noticeable is the rubberized toe cap. The front of the shoes are now covered and protected against scuffs. To a certain extent, the toe cap protects you from injury from rocks flipped up from the front wheel. Improvements to the heel also make this one a touch more comfortable. Otherwise, the Sidi Dragon 3 Carbon SRS Shoes have the same favored upper (thanks to a blend of Lorica and mesh), and they employ the same four-pronged retention system to keep your foot in place when you stomp on the pedals.At the back of the shoes, the molded plastic heel cup is reinforced with a Sidi's Heel Security System (HSS) -- a rigid, adjustable plastic band that closes the shoe more securely around the back of your heel to anchor it in place around your Achilles no matter how much power you're pouring into the pedals. You'll get less heel slip, and it's a detail that allows you to cinch down the straps of your shoes less tightly -- giving you more comfort, not just more security. The ratcheting buckle allows you to micro-adjust strap pressure across the top of your foot. It's mated to a Soft Arch Compression Strap that spreads the upward stroke pedaling forces across the top of your foot. A Techno II buckle across the middle of your foot is anchored by a monofilament line and dial that further allows you to control the pressure across the forefoot. Even the greatest champions realize defeat from time to time, and a time comes when their dominance is simply over. Similarly, the most advanced cycling shoe on the market, the Sidi Ergo 2 has been surpassed by its successor, the Ergo 3 Vent Carbon Shoes. It has all the same features that made the Ergo 2 such an enviable piece of gear that sponsored pros bought them and hid them under shoe covers adorned with another manufacturer's label. The elemental difference is the addition of venting in the sole to offer selectable airflow into the shoes and four-season comfort. Sidi re-engineered the sole to allow for the venting. It shares the same construction method that they developed with their Carbon Lite sole, yet they've taken out 38 grams in the process. Even with the weight savings, you'll get the same kind of stiffness and razor sharp power transfer you've grown to expect from Sidi. Like Garneau's Ergo Air system, the vent inlet is at the toe. However, Sidi's system can be opened or closed depending on the temperature and your preferences. This, you can do on the bike if necessary. The airflow moves underneath and through the insole to cool your feet in sweltering summer temps.While the sole is important, the closure system can make or break a shoe for us. The Ergo 3 has the same three component arrangement as previous Ergo shoes -- Ratcheting Caliper Buckle, Techno II Buckle, and Velcro Strap. The Ratcheting Caliper Buckle is mated to Sidi's Soft Instep Closure System strap that more evenly spreads the upward stroke pedaling forces across the top of your foot. The buckle on the outside of the foot provides a maximum of two clicks per uptake along with single-click releases, meaning that you can precisely tension the pressure of the strap, even during a race. The Techno II Buckle allows you to micro-adjust strap pressure, so the fit of your upper won't be too loose or too tight. No other system so precisely and so gently provides a custom fit.
